According to Jancis Robinson, the name Ruché was derived from roncet which was a virus that Ruché was, in fact, resilient to! Hence the name Resit, which is my polite way of saying "F*&K YOU to COVID-19". 2020 wasn't easy for anyone, and it continues to be a bear, but like Ruché you have the option to Resist, just like I did when I decided to continue with my plan to open a winery in unprecedented times.

With less than 150 acres produced worldwide*, I had never tasted Ruché in my life! So when I had the opportunity to grab a hold of beautifully farmed grapes in the San Benito AVA I said F yeah let's do this.

Brought here by Randall Grahm in the early 2000s from Castagnole Monferrato in the province of Asti in Piemonte, Italy, to his Popelouchum in San Benito County. The late and great Ron Siletto purchased cuttings from Randall to be grafted to his vines in his Caleri Vineyard just down the road in Tres Pinos, CA. Now farmed by Ron's son, John, and vineyard manager Manuel carefully tend to these amazing three rows of vines which produce just about a ton in 2020.

Dedicated to crafting bold and unique wines, I chose Ruché to be his flagship grape for Hollow Wines as it is wildly expressive in aromas, tastes, and appearance! Harvested on October __, 2020, this grape was driven by Quinn four hours from Tres Pinos to Lompoc inside his Sprinter van with the AC on full blast to keep the grapes as cool as possible. Upon arrival, I hand sorted the grapes, destemmed them, and did a light crush (meaning just barely breaking the skins of the grapes and then transported the fermentation bin into cold storage where they were fermented slowly on skins using only native yeast for 17 days until grapes were completely dry. Then the Ruché was pressed into one new French oak barrel and one neutral barrel for just short of five months. 

On March 10th, 2020, I carefully racked the two barrels into a blending tank where just 30 PPM sulfur was added to preserve the wine and bottled by hand solo. The results speak for themselves as the Ruché is the best representation of San Benito AVA and the Piedmont Region of Italy clashing together in an exuberant and wild wine!

Unfined, unfiltered, transition organic farming practices, vegan, wild yeast, nothing but sulfites added. This wine is Hollow Wines unapologetically winning.
